I love Saturday... a day of rest and ease and fun (usually) for me. I hope to share a bit of that feeling with you each week.
It's mid-January and the color seems to have been sapped out of everything around us by some mysterious force. The sky, the trees, the buildings and the earth all share the same deep shade of pewter. Winter, I suppose.
Don't get me wrong. I do love the change of seasons and the new view of the landscape that comes with each. In winter, we see the structure of our life-giving trees much more clearly. We see a 3-D world of shadows that come to us in the still, dusky days. If we're lucky, we see the way that gentle snowfall decorates streetlights, tree limbs, and fence posts.
Cheryl of the blog http://frizzfrock.blogspot.com/posted a picture this week from a friend in Casablanca, west Kilimanjaro, blazing with the vibrant hues of summer. It surprised me and made me yearn for more color.
Today, I'm thinking of color. One of the most colorful places I've ever been is Capitola, CA, just a stone's throw from Santa Cruz. My family has spent many wonderful summer vacations there, meeting up with extended family and friends for a truly colorful time. I'm thinking of Capitola today.
Looking down into the little hamlet of Capitola, CA |
Mediterranean architecture abounds. |
Reminiscent of Venice, Italy... must be why they named this one The Venetian |
Color attracts color, I suppose. Capitola is rife with vintage cars. |
Just 5 minutes away is Santa Cruz Boardwalk and Beach |
It really IS fun for all ages (grandson and daughter pictured) |

Appreciate your surroundings wherever you are. But today...
I wish you color.
Ah ... Santa Cruz! Such a beautiful place, such an easy place to be healthy and happy. I always loved the Squid Festival - never missed it.
ReplyDeleteWinter in the midwest is so harsh - it is gentle in the midatlantic which might be why I cherish it so much. The stillness is something I luxuriate. When the life force roars upwards in spring, it's so overwhelming. I guess I'm a winter person.
I'm definitely a four seasons kind of person, Reya. I find beauty in each. But wow...it's been G-R-A-Y this winter!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by...I agree completely with your assessment of Santa Cruz. How'd I miss a Squid Festival?
Beautiful pics! I am not a fan of winter, but the other 3 seasons~ I love!
ReplyDeleteThe picture of Tony and Andrea is priceless!!!
Thanks, Vicki! I have another one of Andrea and our "adopted Michigan daughter" CiCi (yes, there are TWO CiCi's!) in front of the Fried Twinkie stand, but I thought she might kill me if I posted that one. :-)
